Upcoming YouTube Videos

So far Sir Ganttalot has posted 8 instructional videos on YouTube. The topics include PMP exam preparation as well as Microsoft Project tips and tricks. You can see the videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/SirGanttalot

As mentioned elsewhere in this Blog the PMP exam changes over on 1 July 2009 to be based on PMBOK v4. Sir Ganttalot is scheduled to deliver several live classes on the new material in June and July. These classes will give me some early insight into what areas of the new syllabus cause the greatest challenges to students. This in turn will give me a list of hot topics for the next series of YouTube videos. I am already planning a video or two addressing the confidence levels of cost, duration and other estimates based on 1 sigma, 2 sigma, etc. Any other suggestions for topics to cover are always welcome, so feel free to make suggestions.

The PMP Exam is Changing!

Are you studying to take your PMP certification exam? If so, make sure you are using the correct version of the PMBOK guide! Starting 1 July 2009 the PMP exam will be based on the material in the 4th Edition PMBOK Guide. Up until end-June 2009 your exam will be based on the 3rd edition of the Guide.

This change over has several implications that might not be immediately apparent. First of all, if you have decided to finally bite the bullet and take the exam before the change over because you have done all your studying so far on the 3rd edition, well for goodness sake get an exam slot scheduled ASAP! Hundreds of like-minded PMP candidates will also be trying to schedule exams before end-June as well, and the available slots at Prometric testing centers will be very hard to find before too much longer.

Another area of concern is to make sure that all of your supplementary study materials align with whatever version of the exam you will be taking. For example if you have decided to take the exam after 1 July against the 4th edition PMBOK material, make sure that any study books, such as the excellent "PMP Exam Success Series: Bootcamp Manual" By Tony Johnson, available from Crossind Project Management, Inc, are aligned with the correct version of the PMBOK Guide. Most books of this type clearly state on the cover what version of the PMBOK Guide they align with.

Lastly, a word of reassurance. If you have studied to take the exam against the PMBOK Guide 3rd edition and you run into a scheduling disaster that prevents you sitting the exam before the changeover, don't give up. The changes from the 3rd to 4th editions of the PMBOK Guide are relatively straightforward, and indeed represent great improvement over the 3rd edition. If you find yourself in this situation, just make a new plan, execute it, and make sure to monitor and control your progress!
